Plague. Disease. Pestilence. This week has been all about the sickness. I don’t know if I have the flu, a sinus infection, or just a bad cold, but I’m about as miserable as a human can imagine. Severe sinus headaches. Completely blocked nasal passages. Aches & pains. And now today, for added fun, a nagging cough has been added to the mix. As if that’s not enough, the LOML was called out of town unexpectedly yesterday morning, so I can’t even go to bed and rest. It’s been less than amusing, to say the least.
The week started out nice. Saturday the LOML and Brandon had a boy scout sleepover on the USS Kidd in Baton Rouge, preceded by a day at the LSU Rural Life Museum’s Harvest Days Festival. Kate and I went to the festival with them, and we all had a lot of fun. As usual, I would have liked more time with the historical exhibits, but that’s life with kids for you. I got to take a glancing blow at most of it, at least. I couldn’t help thinking how much my mom would have loved that place. It’s exactly what she always dreamed of turning the farm into – her hobby was collecting 19th and early 20th century tools, kitchen utensils, and furniture, with the hope of one day opening a shop that was set up like a rural home from those times. It never really worked out, due to lack of space and the economy in Louisiana in the 80′s, so I think she would have loved to see something like this place. In retrospect I wish I had taken more photos, but the LOML and I plan to go back anyway on our own for more exploring and to see the Windrush Gardens, which we missed due to time constraints. Still, it was a great fall day outing.
Still no rain, though that’s expected to end next week. At this point I’m starting to wonder if the local weather forecasters are calling for rain just to keep their heads. Give people something to hope for, perhaps. I don’t know. I’m heading out today to get some pansies, though, so I hope they’re right. Otherwise, I’ll be breaking out the hoses again next week.
A little writing, mostly revision work on the novel this week before the plague set in. My kids have activities scheduled back to back for the rest of the week, and what with being sick, I doubt much else will get done. Still, I’m thinking. And, I have the idea for the next book already formulating. I plan to start the outline next week.
